Early vs Late

There is a magic frame serial number of 527,510 where the engine underwent many of the major changes that designate the "Early style" versus "Late style".  These are marked with an asterisk below.

Other changes may also still sometimes be referred to as "Early" or "Late", but did not occur at the 527,510 number.


Typically Considered "Early"
  • Engine
    • Offset carb (different airbox) *
    • 45-degree header angle *
    • Cylinder head with more offset intake attach point *
    • Engine with oil filter access plate at the bottom *
    • Clutch outer cover fastened with bolts *
    • Cylinder jug with 14mm hole for cam chain guide roller bolt *
    • Tensioner with an adjusting bolt*
    • Crankshaft splines with a shallower root diameter*
    • Gearshift drum with bolts (forks must match)*
    • Right crankcase has oval oil passage leading into right crankcase cover, also requiring the exhaust rocker shaft with the restrictor
    • Alternator with smaller windings with more turns covered in cloth tape
    • Geared oil pump
  • Other
    • Two piece muffler
    • Rear fender painted silver
    • Low handlebars
    • 3-position ignition switch

Typically Considered "Late"
  • Engine
    • Inline carb (different airbox) *
    • 90-degree header angle *
    • Cylinder head with centered intake attach point *
    • Oil filter in a slot behind the right crankcase cover *
    • Clutch outer cover fastened with 5x12 countersunk pan screws *
    • Cylinder jug with 10mm hole for cam chain guide roller bolt *
    • Tensioner without an adjusting bolt*
    • Crankshaft splines with a deeper root diameter*
    • Cylinder head with valve stem seal on the exhaust guide*
    • Gearshift drum with cotter pins (forks must match)*
    • Alternator with larger windings covered with cream or red/clear epoxy
    • Trochoid oil pump (high output)
  • Other
    • One piece muffler
    • Chrome rear fender
    • High handlebars
    • 2-position ignition switch
